- INTRODUCTION
-
- PATH_MAN is a utility that searches the directory path elements of the PATH
- statement for a given file. The search file name may include DOS wildcard char-
- acters. The ERRORLEVEL variable is set, based on the results of this search, to
- allow more user friendly batch files - a graceful exit can be made when needed
- data files or programs are missing. Optionally, the path element on which the
- search file is located may be displayed.
-
- Major Features
-
- * Searches the directory path elements of the current PATH statement for a
- given file.
- * Sets the ERRORLEVEL variable, based on the results of this search, to allow
- more user friendly batch files - a graceful exit can be made when needed data
- files or programs are missing.
- * Optional display of the first path element on which the search file name is
- found.
- * DOS wildcard characters of * and ? may be used in the search file name.
- * Small size and fast operation.
-
- System Requirements
-
- PATH_MAN will run on an IBM PC, XT, AT or true compatibles. It has been tested
- with PC-DOS/MS-DOS operating systems, version 3.0 through version 6.0.
-
- Manual Format
-
- This manual is divided into several introductory chapters followed by chapters
- for operating PATH_MAN. The format of these chapters and the information pre-
- sented therein has been standardized using the following conventions.
-
- Page layout - Each page has a header detailing the chapter and the program ver-
- sion covered. A footer displays the manual page number.
-
- Brackets and parentheses - Brackets, [...], are used in the manual and in the
- help screens to specify what should be entered in response to the current
- prompt. If a character string is to be entered, the type of character is noted,
- such as ALPHA, NUMERIC, ANY, etc. Parentheses, (..), are used for comments.
-
- Computer key conventions - Keys specified in the manual text that are not in
- entry brackets are shown as reversed, such as ESCAPE . All key references are
- in capital letters for clarity.
-
- Action steps - Some procedures may require selection from a menu of options,
- inputting data or following a sequence of steps. Most manual sections will first
- give an overview of the function or task under discussion and then detail the
- various action operating procedures. In order to make this manual easier to use
- a symbol, -> , marks the beginning of each of these action operating procedures.
-
- ■■■■_MAN programs - The general group of shareware programs by MicroMetric is
- referred to by the name ■■■■_MAN. It may also be used in reference to a specific
- program in that group.

- INTRODUCTION PATH_MAN Version 1.1
-
- Shareware distributed documentation manual - The documentation file included on
- the shareware distribution diskette contains the same information as the printed
- and bound manual, supplied as part of registration, with two exceptions, the
- result of the word processor, formatting, and printer used. The first is that
- all of the control display characters (ASCII 1-31) and the reverse print key-
- board codes are NOT shown properly. Finally, bolding, underlining, and special
- symbols are NOT present.
-
- Shareware
-
- PATH_MAN is being distributed as SHAREWARE. The SHAREWARE concept allows users
- to examine a program on a trial basis, at no (or minimal) charge, before pur-
- chasing it. In addition, by decreasing marketing costs, professional quality
- software may be distributed for a fraction of the cost of a comparable commer-
- cial product. Regardless of whether you register the program, please help dis-
- tribute PATH_MAN by sharing unmodified copies of it and its files with others.
-
- You are hereby granted the right to use the PATH_MAN program for a thirty (30)
- day evaluation period. If you find PATH_MAN of value, and continue to use it
- after this evaluation period, YOU MUST REGISTER YOUR PROGRAM USE. This will
- provide you with:
-
- * A 7" x 8 1/2" printed and bound manual.
- * PATH_MAN phone or mail support for one year.
- * Notification of the next PATH_MAN release.
- * Ability to suppress the shareware registration reminder message displayed
- at the end of the program.
- * An installation/update/registration branding program.
- * Sincere thanks for your support of the SHAREWARE concept.
-
- A Single System Program Registration entitles the user to unlimited use of the
- PATH_MAN program on a single computer.
-
- A Site License Program Registration entitles the user to unlimited use of the
- PATH_MAN program on all computers, including networks, at a single corporate
- location.
-
- Program Registration, Single System . . . . . $15.

- INSTALLING THE SYSTEM
-
- Installation on Non-Path Referenced Directories
-
- If the PATH_MAN files are not located on PATH referenced directories, then, when
- executing PATH_MAN, either:
-
- 1. The drive-directory on which they are located must be made the current
- one, or
- 2. The drive-directory on which they are located must be specified on the
- command line.
-
- See the chapter "Running PATH_MAN" for more complete details on operation if the
- files are not located on path directories.
-
- From a Diskette Vendor
-
- If the PATH_MAN program has been obtained from a diskette vendor, you should
- follow any of their instruction on unpacking/installing the programs (if indeed
- they have separate instructions.) The program, and its files, can be supplied as
- a self extracting file whose name is "PMANvvv.EXE" (vvv is the version, such as
- "PMAN100").
-
- This file should first be copied to a directory on your hard disk. This direc-
- tory may be a new one, such as one named "PATH", and created specifically for
- PATH_MAN, or a current one, such as "UTILITY", that has other programs/files.
- For information on creating a separate directory, see your DOS manual.
-
- Once the file is copied to the desired hard disk directory, at the DOS prompt
- change to this drive directory, and then type the EXE file name (such as
- "PMAN100") and press ENTER . This will unpack all of the PATH_MAN files.
-
- From a BBS
-
- If the PATH_MAN file was downloaded from a Bulletin Board, it should first be
- copied to a directory as defined above, and then unpacked, using whatever pro-
- gram is specified by the Bulletin Board. It is normally distributed with a name
- of "PMANvvv.ZIP" (vvv is the version) or "PMANvv.ZIP" and requires the program
- PKUNZIP, version 2, to unpack the files.
-
- Registered Version
-
- Registered users should use the program "INSTALL", that is supplied upon regis-
- tration. This program will create a registration file which will, in turn, sup-
- press the shareware registration reminders.
-
- -> To install PATH_MAN on your hard disk, or to upgrade to a new release, follow
- the steps detailed below:
-
- 1. Place the PATH_MAN distribution diskette in your floppy diskette drive.
-
- 2. At the DOS prompt, change to the drive in which the distribution diskette is
- located. For example, if the diskette was placed in drive A, type A : and
- press ENTER .
-
- 5
-
- INSTALLING THE SYSTEM PATH_MAN Version 5.1
-
- 3. Type I N S T A L L and press ENTER . The installation program
- will then be loaded, and its display should be as shown below.

-
- Program Operation with Microsoft Windows
-
- PATH_MAN may be run as a DOS application under Windows. To aid in its operation,
- an icon file, "PATH_MAN.ICO", and a program information file, "PATH_MAN.PIF",
- have been included. These should be installed into a Windows program group. See
- your Microsoft Windows manual for specific installation details.

- RUNNING PATH_MAN
-
- The syntax to execute the PATH_MAN utility program is:
-
- PATH_MAN FileName[option]
-
- A space MUST be present after the program name and before the FileName parame-
- ter. A space MUST NOT be placed between the FileName and the option, if it is
- present.
-
- FileName
-
- The file name to be found follows the standard DOS conventions, with a maximum
- of eight characters for the file name and three characters for the extension
- with a '.' separator. The DOS wildcard characters of ? and * may be used. If no
- extension is specified, the match will be on name with all extensions matching.
-
- Option
-
- If the FileName is followed by a '?' character, the program will display the
- search results. If a matching file is found, a message with the path of the
- FIRST matching file is displayed. If no matching file is found, a message with
- the FileName searched for is displayed. In both cases the ERRORLEVEL value is
- also displayed.
-
- NOTE: A '?' at the end of the FileName[option] is always treated as an option
- rather that a DOS wildcard '?'.
-
- Operation
-
- PATH_MAN searches the path directory elements referenced in the PATH statement
- in the order in which they appear. For example, with the PATH statement -
-
- PATH=[D1:Path1][D2:Path2][...]
-
- the path element D1:Path1 is searched first followed by D2:Path2. If a match is
- found, the search is terminated and the ERRORLEVEL variable is set.
-
- ERRORLEVEL
-
- The ERRORLEVEL variable is set based on the results of the search for FileName.
-
- If a match to FileName is found on any of the path directory elements of the
- PATH statement, ERRORLEVEL is set to the ordinal number of the Dx:Pathx path on
- which the file is found. This number may range from one to the number of ele-
- ments in the PATH statement.
-
- If PATH_MAN is not present or FileName is NOT found on any of the path directory
- elements of the PATH statement, ERRORLEVEL is set to 0.
-
- NOTE: PATH_MAN's use of the ERRORLEVEL variable is the inverse of many (if not
- most) programs: a zero ERRORLEVEL is bad and a non-zero value is good. The
- main reasons for this is to assure that PATH_MAN.COM is present and allow
- the path element number to be passed to the batch file.
-
- 13
-
- RUNNING PATH_MAN PATH_MAN Version 1.1
-
- Shareware message
-
- A shareware message may be randomly displayed at the end of PATH_MAN. Pressing
- any key will exit the program. By registering your use of PATH_MAN, you will be
- able to use the registration serial number to suppress this shareware message
- display.
-
- Examples
-
- For the purpose of these examples, assume that only files PATH_MAN.COM, XYZ.COM
- and ABC.COM are on PATH directories.
